Get to know Team Zebra!
In this blog series, we’re going behind the scenes of Zebra to introduce our team.
In this article, we meet Howard Hughes, copywriter and director at Zebra Marketing and Communications Ltd.
- How long have you been at Zebra Marketing and Communications Ltd?
I joined Zebra at the beginning of 2012.
- What enticed you to join Zebra?
I’m married to Clara and was working as a freelance writer when she founded the company. As the business grew, I joined the company as a copywriter, to provide additional creative support, and in 2017 I became a co-director of the company.
- What does your role entail?
I spend most of my time at Zebra writing, editing and proofreading copy for our clients. This can be everything from blog articles or social media posts, to press releases, or website and brochure copy.
- What do you find most rewarding about your role?
Writing about a wide range of subjects. It’s often the case that to write copy for a business, organisation or individual there’s a great deal of background research, to gain insight into what they do and how they do it. We end up becoming expert in a very wide range of subjects.
- What has been your greatest challenge?
Working in an office. For years I worked remotely as a writer or outdoors in construction, and could never see myself working in an office environment. But it actually turned out to be the best thing I could have done, as working in a small office, as part of a team, is very rewarding.
- What does a typical day look like for you?
There’s not really a typical day, beyond the fact that it will involve writing. But if I’m working in the Zebra office in Rossett, it’s usually a mixture of writing copy and discussing projects. Being in the office really highlights the collaborative nature of writing and the creative process – solo working can sometimes feel quite isolating.
- Why do you think clients enjoy working with Zebra?
Everyone in the team, and particularly Clara, are good communicators and I think that translates into our work. Although we work with a wide range of clients, in all kinds of sectors, we have a ‘marketing voice’ that is recognisably Zebra’s.
- What are your main interests outside of Zebra?
I’m an author, mostly specialising in cinema, so I spend a lot of time watching all kinds of films for research. I’ve authored or co-authored 16 books and also work with film distributors on home media releases. To relax, I enjoy walks and country pubs, gigs and listening to music, or reading for research or pleasure.
